Born in Henry County, Virginia, Peter Goodman Rea (1819-1899) moved with his family to Cooper County, Missouri, after the death of his mother in 1827. Following the death of his father in 1835, Rea joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and enrolled in the Cumberland Presbyterian College in Kentucky in 1837.
